Pro-Wrestling FURY held its annual Christmas party tonight from the dojo in Osaka. For the third year in the row, the party was open to not just employees of the company, but select Official Fan club members, with over 150 people packed into the Osaka Prince Hotel banquet hall.
The atmosphere was filled with joy and merriment, with several Christmas carols breaking out through out the night. The party was especially enjoyed by the members of UPRISER'Z, who essentially kept to themselves in a corner, hording a majority of the alcohol. In fact, Kyoto Okazaki would eventually be forced to leave after attempting to molest Fumihiko Shirai in his inebriated state...
Towards the end of the party, the official company awards were released for the year.
This year's MVP award was a toss up between Akira Takayoshi, who reigned as F-MAX Heavyweight Champion for most of the year, and Tetsuhisa NAKAI, who dethroned Akira as champion, before going on to win the F-MAX Summit tournament. But in the end, Akira Takayoshi earned the award, topping off an incredible year that also included a victory over Kazuma Fujita to unify the F-MAX and PWC World Heavyweight title on 5/31.
Speaking of which, 2008's best bout was that same match between Akira and Fujita, which has also gone on to win several fan site awards as well.
Best tag team was a no brainer, as TAKU and Mastodon Fukuda won the award hands down. Together, the two have reigned as arguably the greatest tag team in the world since winning the F-MAX Tag Team titles over a year ago. In 2008, they broke the record of any team with six successful defenses of their F-MAX Tag Team titles..
For the first time in company history, an award was given out for best unit. And once again, there was no more dominating faction in FURY than UPRISER'Z. Along with TAKU and Fukuda's reign as tag team champions, Kyoto Okazaki also reigned over the Jr. Heavyweight division as champion with four defenses in 2008. The inclusion of Shin Kaiju and Daisuke Iwata have only strengthened the unit.
While Akira won MVP, Tetsuhisa NAKAI would be awarded the “Outstanding Performance” trophy for his incredible return to FURY this year. NAKAI had a rocky start to the year after forming ORIGIN with Hiroaki Nakata and ZERO Kubota, but closed the year with three incredible feats: First by dethroning FURY Ace Akira Takayoshi as F-MAX Heavyweight Champion in September, second by winning the F-MAX Summit tournament in November, and finally third, with his incredible victory over the legendary Ryo Inoue in front of over 16,000 fans at Osaka Castle Hall.
No wrestler showed more Burning Spirit in 2008 than Chikao Kessin, who continues to just be within arms length of breaking out as a top player in the FURY ring. His never ending attitude earned some notable victories in the year, including one over Kazuma Fujita en route to the finals of this year's F-MAX Summit tournament. He capped off the year defeating fellow Sumo Ozeki Izumo Yoritomo at Castle Hall. After the match, Kessin gave a passionate speech, preaching the multiple strengths of Pro-Wrestling over the one-dimensional strength of Sumo, and called himself a “Pro-Wrestler.”
There were several strong candidates for this year's Technique award, including Yoshihiro Shimoda, ATSUKA and Etsuya Kawachi. However, the award was given to Kotaro Ota, who made significant strides in developing several attacks that aided him in winning the 2008 J1-MAX League tournament, in addition to capturing the F-MAX Jr. Heavyweight Championship from Kyoto Okazaki.
Among the four candidates for FURY's Newcomer award, Kazuki Sendo stood out as the best all-around prospect, showing ambition and a flicker of Burning Spirit! Out of the three remaining FURY MAX rookies, Sendo has been the only to show significant movement after petitioning to join NEW FORCE. While we have yet to see how it'll play out in January, his drive is admirable for a wrestler of his age and experience.
The final prize given out as this year's “Topic Award,” which is given to be most significant event (or “subject.”) of the year. This year, the bitter war between FURY and KAZUMA WORLD won top honors. Kazuma Fujita's attempt to destroy his own creation ranked up there as one of the biggest events between the months of October of 2007 and May of 2008, climaxing with the epic unification of Akira Takayoshi's F-MAX Heavyweight title and Fujita's PWC World Heavyweight title. In the end, Akira Takayoshi showed the strength of FURY by defeating Fujita to unify the two crowns into one, creating the most important prize in Pro-Wrestling since the GC Heavyweight title.
